    The Kluže fortress - presentation

The Kluže fortress is definitely one of the most picturesque fortifications in Slovenia. Towering above the Koritnica gorge, it was once used to control entry into the Bovec basin from the direction of Predel.

The present fortress was built in 1883. Before that time, only a wooden Venetian fort stood here to defend Venice from the Turks.

The fortress also played an important role in WWI and remained untouched until 1945, when part of it was torn down in order to widen the road. Today, the mighty walls are overgrown with greenery, and the interior has been turned into a regional history museum.
