Velika planina is a true natural treasure: the highest plateau of the Kamnik Alps and the mountain plateau with the best-preserved herdsmen's settlement in Europe. Wooden herdsmen's huts with ellipsoidal shingled roofs are scattered all over the area, and the herdsmen who still tend to the animals keep the old ways and traditions alive.

The rich alpine flora of the grasslands, the Karst basins, lakes, spruce trees, lone birch trees and the fresh mountain air all help make the area extremely attractive for hikers and strollers. Part of the central plateau has collapsed to create a natural bridge, and on the western edge of the plateau you'll find a picturesque natural window called Luknja.

Many events are organized on the plateau during the summer. During the winter, it's a great place for skiing.
