The original church of St. Vid in Brezje became the most popular pilgrimage center in Slovenia after 1863, when miraculous powers were ascribed to its painting of the Madonna and Child.

Since the original church was too small to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims who wished to ask a boon of Mary, construction on the present day neorenaissance church began in 1889.

In October 1988, the Pope John Paul II.raised the church to the rank of basilica, giving it special privileges.
