Turjak castle - presentation
The Turjak castle is one of the mightiest castles in the former Kranjska area and is closely connected to Slovenian literary history.
The irregularly shaped ground plan is emphasized by the renaissance fortress and the defensive towers.
The outer wall of the fortress is covered by a large heraldic relief with the count's symbol. The central castle courtyard contains well-preserved single-storey living quarters and a gothic chapel. The Protestant writer and translator of the Bible Jurij Dalmatin once preached in the old castle (Lutheran) chapel.
It is said that Dalmatin hid from his pursuers in the Lutheran cellar, a small space above the castle chapel.
