The Cathedral of St. Nicholas - presentation

In the 13th century, a pilgrimage church dedicated to Nicholas, the patron saint of fishermen and boatmen, stood at the location of the present day cathedral. It was rebuilt several times and eventually replaced by a new baroque church in the early 18th century.

The mighty cathedral was built according to the blueprints of the Roman architect Andrea Pozza and is adorned by Quagli's illusionist art. The altar picture of St. Nicholas in a gilded brass frame was created by Langus and is flanked by marble statues of St. Peter and St. Paul.

Underneath the altar picture stand the choir seats of the bishop and the twelve canons. The backs of the seats are decorated by gilded reliefs.
