The Kanin plateau is a world famous example of Karst mountain plateaus and one of the most important speleological areas in Slovenia.

Karst phenomena such as chasms, corrosion forms, škavnice (round or oblong depressions in rock, caused by corrosion), sinkholes, natural bridges and others are found here in great numbers, giving a unique appearance to the mountainous landscape.

The water has carved many paths through the underground, creating the deepest Slovenian chasms and caves. The southern slopes of Kanin are lined by numerous Karst springs such as the picturesque Boka waterfall above Bovec.
