Križevci takes its name after one of the oldest churches on the Mura plain. The area boasts a rich archeological heritage, especially the prehistoric Hallstatt culture. Horse breeding and horse races have a long tradition here. There is a great number of lakes in the area. One of the largest is Gajševsko jezero, created by the dam on the Ščavnica river. These lakes are very important to the tourist trade, as they provide possibilities for fishing and water sports.
