Koper, the capital of Slovenian seaside

Koper is one of the oldest cities in Slovenia. This is the part of Slovenia, where it's easy to feel the Mediterranean touch. In Roman times, the city was known by the name of Caprea. In 1278 it joined the Venice state and was later renamed to Capo d'Istria – the Head of Istria. Originaly the city was built on an island and it remained an island town until the 19th century, when embankments were built to link the island to the mainland. When the swamp between the mainland and the island was drained, Koper gained extensive territory and consequently, it became an important commercial center.

Since the second world war, Slovenians represent the majority of the population in Koper, but Venetian heritage can be seen on almost every corner of the old city center. Many buildings from 15th to the 18th century are well preserved. Among them, perhaps the most recognised are the Praetor's Palace from 15th century, Gothic-Renaissance catedral with a rich interior from the 15th and 16th centuries, the Carpaccioca House, the Tocco palace and the Garvivi Castle. Many other, mostly baroque-style building are also worth seeing.

Koper's countryside is also ful of cultural and natural heritage. Koper is easily reachable with bus and train, the stations are located only a few kilometers from the city center. The nearest aiport is located in Trieste (64 kilometers), but Slovenia's central airport near Ljubljana is also an option (124 kilometers).
