Gornji Grad lies by the river Dreta sreda in the upper Savinja valley.Gornji Grad has a rich cultural and historical heritage. A Benedictine monastery was established in 1140 and was turned into the summer residence of the Ljubljana bishops in the 15th century. Today, it is the church of St. Mohor and St. Fortunat, the largest cathedral in Slovenia with valuable altar paintings by Kremser - Schmidt and a famous shrine.The Gornji grad museum collections display a rich ethnological heritage, minerals, fossils, photographs and religious items.
