We cordially invite you to this renovated 16th-century Renaissance castle where you can admire the permanent exhibition »Five hundred years of the mercury mine and the city of Idrija«. Guided by experts, visitors can explore Idrija's rich history through documents, photographs, a geological collection and the 300-year tradition of Idrija lace.
The exhibition »Milestones of the 20th century« from 2003 paints a picture of life in the Idrija region under Italian and German occupation as well as the creation of a new country after the war.
Since 1953, the castle has housed the Idrija city museum, which received the Luigi Micheletti foundation award in 1997 and was declared the best European industrual and technical heritage museum.
Besides the exhibition at the castle, you can also take a look at the renovated 18th-century miner's house, the mining pump (called kamšt) from 1970 with the largest wooden water wheel in Europe and the display of renewed mining machines in the Frančiška shaft. The Idrija city museum is also the caretaker of the renewed log driving water barriers (called klavže) and the nature museum – the Divje jezero lake.
At Vojsko, you can visit an authentically preserved World War II monument – the Slovene partisan printing house. In the vicinity of Cerkno, there is the Partisan hospital Franja.
