Built in the Middle ages, this Mediterranean port city on the peninsula between the Piran and Strunjan bays is a unique architectural monument. Narrow streets with tightly packed houses give it a special charm. The Tartini square is a noteworthy architectural work of art, surrounded by fascinating palaces and buildings. The maritime history of the Slovenian coast can be explored at the maritime museum, and the ancient method of salt production is one of the Mediterranean's most impressive features even today. Traditional salt gathering by hand from the salt pans is a special part of Slovenia's cultural heritage, preserved as part of the Sečovlje salt pans Nature park. Today, Piran is an administrative and cultural center. Together with the nearby city of Portorož, it forms an important coastal tourist resort with numerous cultural institutions, holiday homes, hotels, restaurants and various cultural events.
