The old city center of Kostanjevica na Krki lies on an artificial island at a meander of the Krka river, beneath the Gorjanci. Kostanjevica is the oldest as well as the smallest city in the Dolenjska region. With its frequent floods, it has often been called the »Venice of Dolenjska«. Many other cultural monuments and works of art also remind visitors of Venice.
