Kobarid, known historically for the famous Battle of Kobarid (when Austro-Hungarian forces broke through the Italian front line and routed the Italian army in 1917), is an old town located where the Alps give way to lower hills. It is an excellent starting point for Alpine hikes and mountaineering. Soča, one of the most beautiful Alpine rivers, exits its gorge near Kobarid and flows calmly over sparkling white gravel. Remnants of World War I can be seen in the nearby hills, and many exhibits are stored at the Kobarid museum.
