Pohorje

Natural sights, Maribor - The Štajerska region

Pohorje is the only silicate mountain range in all of Slovenia and also the only place in the world where čizlakit rock can be found. In ancient Roman times, many marble quarries were established in the area. Pohorje's unique appearance consists of gently curving ridges, plateaus and relatively steep, grooved slopes on the edges. Since the ground is mostly composed of impermeable stone, the area is covered with a thick network of springs, streams and rivers that cut their way through the landscape. Several peat bogs and lakes were created on the ridges, such as the Ribnica lake, the Lakes of Lovrenc and the Black lake. Interesting features of the Pohorje area include expansive grassy plateaus, extremely varied forests, huge trees and the Giant Peacock Moth – the largest moth in Europe.
