Križna jama

Natural sights, Cerknica - The Notranjska region

Križna jama is one of the most important Karst caves in the world. Its entrance and the Bear tunnel (which got its name after the many cave bear bones found inside) were discovered in the 19th century. The cave is made especially seductive by 22 small underground lakes divided by limestone barriers. Since the barriers (and with them the surface of the lakes) gradually rise, the stalagmites on the ground are flooded, giving the impression that the formations are growing out of the water. Aside from Kalvarija, the most beautiful part of the cave, tourists can also visit the Muddy tunnel and the Colourful tunnel. The latter is only accessible by boat, but contains the mighty columns of King Matjaž as well as incredible stalactites and stalagmites.
