Cultural sights, Ribnica - The Dolenjska region

Located atop a hill in the eastern part of the Ribnica plain, it was built according to the orders of the lord of Ribnica, Jurij Khisl, after people reported seeing miraculous lights atop the hill. The church has an octagonal shape, and its front is surrounded by a covered arcade hall. The building is covered by a 20-meter high dome, and a bell tower with a baroque roof rises above it. The interior is dominated by three golden altars. The main altar is decorated by the church of Mary's Ascension. In 1780, the church received a new addition: the sacred stairs, painted by Anton Postl. This architecturally fascinating structure served as the model for many other religious buildings in Slovenia. For many years, blessings have been given out to motorcycles and motorcyclists next to the church.
