The church of St. John the Baptist in Maribor Cultural sights, Maribor - The Štajerska regionThe church of St. John the Baptist stands in the middle of the Slomšek square in Maribor. Originally a romanesque building, it now has a mostly gothic image. Its impressive interior with a long choir and a nave with cross ribbed arches are the most interesting architectural features. The image is completed by stone seats, a statue of A.M. Slomšek and choir benches whose backs are decorated with reliefs showing the life of John the Baptist. The outer facades of the church are adorned with many gravestones covered by figures and coats of arms. At the edge of the park in front of the church stands a monument to A.M. Slonšek, the first bishop of the Lavantine diocese
