Bogojina

Cultural sights, Murska Sobota - The Prekmurje region

Once a bustling center of pottery, weaving and barrel making trade, the village of Bogojina is now mostly known for one of the most beautiful modern religious buildings in Slovenia. The church of the Lord's Ascension was designed by architect Jože Plečnik, who used the original romanesque building it as a kind of vestibule for his expanded two nave asymmetrical variant. The church's most impressive features are the cylindrical bell tower with a lookout point and a smaller tower with a round roof. The ceramic decorations inside remind visitors that this area is known for its quality pottery. The view from the church's outlook point is one of the most beautiful on the entire Pomurje plain.
