Mežica lead and zinc tourist mine

Cultural sights, Mežica - The Koroška region

For centuries, the tunnels beneath Peca were filled with the blood and sweat of miners, of men who lost their lives searching for zinc and lead. It is believed that people began  looking for ore in the area as early as the times of ancient Rome, but the earliest written proof of lead mines dates back to 1665. That year marks the official beginning of ore mining in the land. Many years of mining made their mark on the valley and the people at the foot of the Karavanke mountains. Today, the tourist mine and museum in Mežica present the history of mining and the tough life of a miner. The magic of the underground is also evident in the minerals that sometimes shine from the crack.
