Bled Island with the church of Mary is a true pearl in the middle of Lake Bled and one of the most recognizable Slovenian landmarks. The church with its golden central altar and three black marble side altars has been rebuilt several times and is known for its free standing bell tower. 99 stone steps lead to the platform with the church, bell tower, churchkeeper's house, dean's house and hermitary. Many people come here to ring the church's wishing bell, said to bring good luck. The island, which was once the site of a temple to the Slavic goddess of love, can be reached by special boats called »pletnja«.
