Piran

Cultural sights, Piran - Southern Primorska

Tightly packed with well-preserved old buildings, this Mediterranean city on the peninsula between the bays of Piran and Strunjan is a unique kind of monument. Its narrow, winding streets, lined with teeming Mediterranean vegetation, give it a special splendour. The peninsula ends at Punta and the Madona cape. The Tartini square is a noteworthy architectural work of art, surrounded by interesting palaces and buildings. The most impressive among them is the Venetian house (benečanka), built in a Venetian gothic style with accentuated decoration and contrast between the white stone and red walls. The church of St. George watches over the area from the hill in the northern part of the city.
