Idrija lace

Cultural sights, Idrija - Northerm Primorska

The Idrija and Cerklje areas are famous for their rich cultural heritage, but one tradition stands out in particular: the creation of lace, an activity that requires a great deal of knowledge and needlework skills. Idrija lacemaking began blossoming during the 18th century, and was famous all over Europe by the end of the 19th century. Lace was exported from the area to Central and Northern Europe, America and Argentina. Thus, lacemaking in Idrija soon grew from a simple trade into an amazing, aesthetic art characterized by masterful design and high quality. In 1876, a special lacemaking school was established. Today, the tradition is being kept alive with events such as the Idrija Lace festival.
